A brief History of the MWRC

The Muddy Waters Retriever Club is all about training working retrievers, versatile hunting dogsand having a good time.

The club got its start on the internet. In early 2002, Perry Stewart was looking for a club to join near Central Wisconsin to help with the training of his new retriever. There were no clubs within 100 miles of Central Wisconsin. He got in contact with Jim Esslinger on a Hunting Chat Forum, and they met together on a couple of occasions to train. Perry contacted Kevin McMahon, and Jim Contacted Paul Rheinschmidt and Will Minette on the forums to join their training sessions as each were also looking for a club or people to train with in Central Wisconsin. After a few months, word got out as the training group grew, thoughts turned to forming an official retriever club in the summer of 2002.

The club name originated from a bunch of duck hunting guys on the same chat forum tossing out ideas, the list was reduced to a few and voted on and the name became "The BackWater Retriever Club". After some searching we soon found out that the name was already taken by another club, so we switched it shortly thereafter to the second most popular name, the Muddy Waters Retriever Club.

The original intentions were to become AKC affilliated, but due to our lack of official history, the club could not meet much of AKC's criteria. So we contacted Jack Sobczak and Stewart Henderson of Horicon Marsh HRC about becoming an HRC club. Jack and Stu came down with Mike Witt and Roger Davis of WISILL HRC to talk to our group about HRC affiliation.

At our 1st unofficial banquet in January of 2003 the group voted to become an official club and affiliate with HRC. Jim Esslinger was elected President, Perry Stewart Vice-President, Will Minette Treasurer and Kevin McMahon Secretary.

The club got together to train every two weeks for the next two years. We joined the Mead Grounds Assoc. (MGA) and jointly put on training seminars with other hunting dog clubs in the area each year. We held our first retreiver fun day event in August of 2003, and in May of 2005, held our first licensed HRC hunt test.

If you would like to visit on a training day, we would be glad to have you come and work your retriever. If you would like to join, just click on the "join" link above and send in an application.
This club only works thru the dedication and participation of our members.

About us

MWRC is a charter member of the Hunting Retriever Club(HRC) and the United Kennel Club (UKC)as are many of our members. You do not have to be a member of HRC/UKC to become a member of our club.

Every member will have full use of all training equipment and the support of all of our members. We are all there to help eachother!
Througout the summer we hold hunt tests, training seminars and an occasional fun day picnic. We also hold fund raiser raffles to raise money to buy better equipment to help our members in their retriever training.
